Assisted Living Move-In Checklist: Your Essential Guide to a Smooth Transition

Deciding to move to an assisted living community can be a challenging thought. It often comes with mixed emotions, ranging from relief at finding a safe and supportive environment to sadness about leaving a long-time home. This transition period is deeply personal and can be overwhelming for those involved. It's essential to approach this change with empathy and understanding, recognizing the significance of every step taken toward a new beginning. Transitioning to assisted living is a significant and often essential step for older adults and their families. It involves not only physical relocation but also emotional adjustments and practical planning. To help you navigate this journey, we at Columbia Cottage have created a comprehensive assisted living move-in checklist. We aim to ensure that this move is as smooth and stress-free as possible so you and your loved ones can focus on embracing this new chapter in life. Contact Us How to Choose the Right Assisted Living Facility. Choosing the right assisted living community is the most important first step in the journey. It's essential to consider several factors to ensure that the chosen facility meets your or your family's needs and preferences. Location and Accessibility: Proximity to family members and friends can significantly affect the quality of life of a resident. Make sure the facility is conveniently located and allows for regular visits. Services and Amenities: Evaluate the services provided, such as medical care, recreational activities, dining options, and personal care services. Ensure the facility offers a variety of amenities that cater to the interests and needs of your loved one. Staff and Care Quality: The professionalism and compassion of the staff are critical. Visit the facility, talk to the staff, and observe their interactions with residents. Living Spaces and Floor Plans: Assess the living spaces to ensure they are comfortable, safe, and conducive to the lifestyle you want to lead. Check for things like accessible bathrooms, handrails, and emergency response systems. Managing Emotional Aspects Moving to an assisted living facility can be an emotional experience for both the resident and their families. Addressing these emotions thoughtfully is essential for a smooth transition. If you are having difficulty dealing with the emotional tumultuousness of this time in your life, consider these tips to help. Open Communication: Encourage open and honest discussions about the move. Address any fears, concerns, or misconceptions your loved one may have. Involvement in Decision-Making: Involve the person moving in the decision-making process as much as possible. This involvement can help them feel more in control and less anxious about the move. Emotional Support: Provide consistent emotional support. Share positive aspects of the move and reassure them of the benefits, such as increased social interactions and access to medical care. Visits and Socialization: Plan regular visits and encourage friends and family to do the same. Staying connected with loved ones can help ease the transition and reduce feelings of loneliness. Contact Us Organizing for a Positive Move Preparation is key to moving to assisted living as smoothly as possible. A well-thought-out plan can significantly ease the transition, including gathering essential documents, packing personal items and clothing, managing medications, and coordinating with a moving company. Reviewing facility guidelines, arranging an orientation, and ensuring emotional support from family and friends are also crucial. Following these comprehensive checklists can help ensure a smooth and positive move, making the new living space feel like home from day one. 1. Packing Personal Belongings Bring important documents such as medical records, identification, insurance papers, and legal documents. Pack personal items that have sentimental value and will help make the new living space feel like home, like photographs or a favorite piece of artwork. Ensure that the resident will have access to comfy, familiar clothing. Prepare for the transition by ensuring the resident's medications and any necessary medical equipment are available and ready for move-in day. 2. Arranging Furniture and Decor Determine what furniture can fit into the new living space and what you can bring into the facility from home. Focus on comfort and functionality. Choose common items, which may include a comfortable favorite chair, bedside table, and a few personal touches like a favorite lamp, framed photos, or a small throw rug. Bring items that reflect the resident’s personality and preferences. These items might include favorite bedding, decorative pillows, and small pieces of art. Bringing something familiar from home can help ease the transition. 3. Coordinating with the Facility If necessary, hire a moving company experienced in relocations for older adults. They can provide specialized services to ensure the move is handled with care. Review the facility's guidelines on what items are allowed and any restrictions they might have. This will help avoid unnecessary stress on moving day. Arrange for an orientation or tour of the facility for the potential resident and family members. Familiarizing them with the new environment can help smooth out a transition into a new home environment. Contact Us Making the Move Day Stress-Free You will want to start the day early when it's move-in day. Allow plenty of time for the move, address any unexpected issues, and help the resident adjust to a new environment. Having family members and friends present can provide emotional and physical support, ensuring the process goes as smoothly as possible. Keep the atmosphere positive and focus on the benefits of the move. Celebrate this new chapter with a small gathering or meal in the new living space, helping to create a warm and welcoming environment from the start. May we always find joy and inspiration in the simple wonders that surround us each day.

June’s Bubble Balooza: A Month of Fun, Music, and Patriotism

June was a month filled with pure, soapy fun! We declared it "Bubble Balooza" and celebrated all things bubbles throughout the entire month. This June, we came together for a rousing Flag Day celebration! Yes, we began flag day with a heartfelt recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance, a powerful reminder of the values our flag represents. The talented Mary-Kate Spring Lee, harpist, vocalist, and songwriter brought her class along to share their musical gifts. Their beautiful melodies filled the air, creating a truly special atmosphere. We were also fortunate to have another visit from the versatile Jessica Phillips Rife, opera singer, church music director, pianist, songwriter, and recording artist. Ms. Rife not only graced us with her presence on Memorial Day, but also returned for Flag Day, treating everyone to a selection of patriotic music spanning generations. Her performance was a highlight of the celebration, and we are so grateful for her time and talent. June's Bubble Balooza was a resounding success! It was a month filled with laughter, connection, and pure, soapy fun. -Lawrence, Activities Coordinator

Keeping Cool in August

Staying hydrated and protecting skin from the sun are critical for everyone during the summer. Dehydration and heat-related illness can lead to delirium or confusion and increase fall risk. People with memory loss might not notice these symptoms. Alzheimer’s disease makes it difficult for people to recognize thirst and regulate their body temperature. Helping people cope with the heat is an important responsibility for caregivers. Hydration Tips Set regular reminders to encourage drinking water throughout the day. This can be done through alarms, notes, or verbal cues. You could also make it a point to offer a drink every hour. Keep cool water in an accessible pitcher or dispenser with cups. Slices of lemon, lime, or cucumber make water look more enticing. Placing cute drink napkins or some flowers near the water is also attractive. Offer beverages people enjoy. Herbal iced tea and sparkling water are some examples. Just be mindful to avoid juices or sodas that are high in sugar. Offer fruits and vegetables with high water content, such as watermelon, strawberries, cucumbers, and tomatoes. Watch for visible signs of dehydration, such as dry mouth and fatigue. Serve a drink at every activity. Serve Arnold Palmers (iced tea mixed with lemonade) for a daily “happy hour.” Skin Protection Tips Remind or help people to apply broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 to all exposed skin. Reapply the sunscreen every two hours. Encourage wearing lightweight, loose-fitting clothes that cover as much skin as possible. Clothes with UV protection and hats help, too. Find outdoor spaces in the shade. Umbrellas and trees are your friends! Depending on your location, stay indoors during the sun’s peak hours. In many places, noon to 4:00 p.m. is the sunniest time. Make a point of spending some time outdoors in the morning or evening. Blue Lizard sunscreen is recommended by dermatologists. It is mineral-based and safe for sensitive skin. Remember to take care of yourself. As a caregiver or companion, staying hydrated and protecting your skin are critical to preserving your health and energy.

National Peach Month

National Peach Month is in August each year, and it isn't easy to imagine summertime without this juicy summer fruit. Peach season begins in June and lasts until the end of August, and they say that August is when peaches are at their peak. The peach symbolizes youth, immortality, fertility, and union (in Chinese culture); therefore, many Chinese brides carry peach blossoms on their wedding days. Peach also makes a great wedding decor color scheme for brides worldwide. Overall, the peach holds a special significance in Chinese culture, and the only true wild peaches that can be found there, are sour, smaller in size, and very fuzzy. There are over 700 varieties of peaches in the world today, including nectarines, a variant of peaches and not a cross between peaches and plums. Peaches and nectarines only differ in skin texture — peaches are velvety, while nectarines are smooth. The fruit is classified as a drupe, which means it has a hard stone in the center, and there are two kinds of peaches — clingstone and freestone. The names give you an accurate idea of how to differentiate between the two — either way, they make our lives peachier.

Art Adventures

Some of our residents have been busy this summer with creative crafts and paintings! So far we’ve crafted patriotic floral arrangements that brought a burst of red, white, and blue to our festivities. Our themed gnome paintings, adorned in Fourth of July colors, added a whimsical touch to the day. Inspired by the vibrant style of Paul Gauguin, we also painted palm tree scenes, capturing the essence of summer with bold, lively colors.

Staff Appreciation

Our staff appreciation party was a fantastic celebration of teamwork and fun. The event was filled with exciting activities, including a lively game of giant Jenga that had everyone cheering and laughing. We also had various games and prizes, adding to the festive atmosphere. A standout feature of the party was the delicious fruit salad, creatively served in a watermelon carved to look like a pig. It was a wonderful opportunity to recognize and appreciate our hardworking staff!
