National Donut Day

Observing National Donut (Doughnut) Day may become a yearly tradition. We enjoyed freshly baked donuts and took a donut personality test. Many of the residents chose to eat a Glazed Cake Donut which is described as “A plain cake with a little extra, this doughnut appeals to the traditionalist with an edge.”

Snoezelen Rooms

The word Snoezelen might sound funny, but it describes something as uniquely comforting as its name. The term is a contraction formed from a blend of the Dutch word snuffelen (“to snuffle,” “sniff”) and doezelen (“doze,” “snooze”), which is a perfect way to describe the multisensory, non-directive therapy. Developed in the Netherlands in the 1970s, Snoezelen rooms ( snoezelroom) are a controlled, multisensory environment that functions as a therapy space for people with autism and other developmental disabilities, dementia, or brain injury. A Snoezelen room is simultaneously a soothing and stimulating environment that uses lighting effects, color, sounds, music, scents, and more to allow the client, not the therapist, to create a unique experience that allows them to feel comfort and joy. There is no formal expectation of an outcome; rather, it simply allows each client to enjoy a period of time where they can relax, reduce anxiety, and feel engagement on their own terms. While the client is accompanied by an aide or therapist to ensure safety, the latter acts more as a silent observer or helper and typically does not offer any direction, making this a fully “client-centered” approach. Snoezelen rooms are also called multisensory rooms, and they are growing in popularity in assisted living. It’s easy to create a simplified version of these therapeutic rooms to allow clients to relax with the inclusion of aromatherapy diffusers; a starry-night projector or other soft, color-changing lights; tactile seating such as bean bag chairs or a snuggle swing; or even a tactile wall that clients can touch or play with by attaching various textiles or materials, such as pipe cleaners, fuzzy balls, Astroturf, sandpaper, or sponges. Alternatively, filling a tactile box with items such as bulk beans or slime can serve the same purpose. These rooms are meant to calm and bring focus to those who might otherwise be anxious due to overstimulation by allowing a person to choose their own activities. One benefit of having a calming multisensory room is alleviating frustration, which allows a person to be calmer, more organized, and better at communication. More Information Check out some examples of Snoezelen rooms. Mobile Snoezelen carts and individual products for a DIY room are available here.

Patriotic Patrons

We showed a little patriotism this July with a red, white, and blue celebration! We had some tasty snacks, talked about the history of our country, sang some songs to honor our country, and honored some of our service members. Residents loved reminiscing about memories of how they used to celebrate the Fourth of July and we talked about ways to celebrate at the cottage as well. They also loved talking about our beautiful country and learning some new fun facts.

Lovely Luau

In continuation of our cultural immersion series, we took the opportunity of National Hawaii Day to learn about the history and culture of the Hawaiian Islands! Did you know that superstition in Hawaii says that if you take rocks from volcanic lands and other sacred areas you will be cursed?? Apart from learning about the culture, we celebrated with food, drinks, and silly pictures. Aloha!

Butterflies 2

Beautiful Butterflies

To celebrate the beginning of summer, we finally set our butterfly friends free! Residents were captivated by their life cycle and were fascinated with watching them grow and hatch out of their chrysalides. They even started naming them (even though we had no idea which was which!). We sent them off with a toast of sparkling cider and wine and wished them well on their next journey out in the world!

Picture Perfect

In honor of National Camera Day, we went back to the basics with Polaroid Pictures! Residents were shocked that this type of camera was still made. We collectively decided to take pictures holding pictures of when they were younger.

Message from the President… Listen to Loved Ones

The older you get, the more you realize your parents are a lot smarter than you thought they were.  People who love you – friends, parents, cousins, siblings – are on your side and usually want what is best for you.  I truly believe that God places friends and family around us to help us discover our purpose.  He gave us loved ones who know us and can share with us a different perspective when faced with difficult situations.  Loved ones with different experiences and opinions help to broaden our world and enable us to continue down the path of self-discovery.  I would encourage you to write a thank-you note to loved ones today for their valuable input into your life.

Streamlining the Process: Seven Steps to Facilitate the Relocation of Elderly Parents from Their Home

Moving elderly parents out of their home and into a retirement community where they will receive more assistance can be a challenging transition for both the parents and their adult children. It’s an emotionally tumultuous time that can be stressful if not handled carefully. However, you can do some things to help navigate this situation with more grace and care. At Columbia Cottage, we’ve helped many families transition from caregivers back to family members and understand what you will need to make this experience successful! Keep reading to get some tips on how to help your family readjust to a new living situation, and then when you’re ready, get in touch with us to talk about our locations for your loved ones. Contact Us 1. Communication and Choice About Their New Home Planning a move to an assisted living facility can often be an emotional and challenging time for the entire family. However, one of the most effective ways to ease this transition is to actively involve your older parents in every aspect of the decision-making process about their new home. This includes choosing the facility itself and deciding on the layout of their new living space, what personal items they wish to bring, and even which services they would like to utilize. Doing so empowers your loved one by giving them a sense of control and ownership over the changes happening. This active involvement can help alleviate feelings of anxiety or uncertainty they may have about the move. It also provides an opportunity for open dialogue, where any fears or concerns can be voiced and addressed, making the entire process more comfortable and less stressful for everyone involved. When planning a move to an assisted living facility like Columbia Cottage, it's vital to engage your elderly parents in the decision making process. This involvement can empower them and alleviate any apprehensions or uncertainties they may have about their new home. 2. Plan Effectively Effective planning is crucial when preparing for a significant life change, such as moving elderly parents out of their home and into an assisted living facility. It's important to start this process well in advance—not only does this allow ample time to research and select the right facility, but it also provides the opportunity to address any concerns or issues that may arise during the journey. Some of these issues might include medical needs, financial considerations, or emotional challenges. Additionally, choosing in advance can help you ensure your loved one gets to live in their preferred community. Early planning can also help you coordinate with other family members, arrange necessary logistics, and prepare your loved one for the transition. Remember, the more prepared you are, the smoother the transition will be, reducing stress for both you and your parents. This thoughtfulness and foresight can make a significant difference in ensuring a successful move to their new home. Contact Us 3. Enlist Relatives Involving other family members in the process of moving your elderly parents out of their home can be incredibly beneficial. Not only does it help distribute the practical workload, but it also fosters a strong support network for your parents during this significant life change. Each family member can contribute uniquely, whether researching potential facilities, packing and sorting belongings, coordinating the move, or simply being there to listen and provide emotional comfort. This collective effort can help ease the transition, ensure all tasks are managed efficiently, and, most importantly, reassure your parents that they are not alone in this journey but surrounded by loved ones who care. 4. Sort and Organize Moving to an assisted living facility often involves downsizing from a larger home to a smaller living space. This transition can be made smoother by prioritizing what needs to be moved. Start by taking inventory of your parents' belongings and determine what is essential, what holds sentimental value, and what can be let go. This task can be emotionally charged, so it's important to approach it with sensitivity and respect for your parents' feelings. Before the move, take the time to downsize and declutter. This process makes the physical move easier and helps create a more manageable and comfortable space in the new home. As you sort through items, clearly label furniture and belongings that will be moved. Clear organization will ensure that everything ends up in the right place in the new home and helps prevent any confusion or mix-ups during the move. Ensuring a well-organized move can significantly reduce stress for everyone involved. 5. Plan the Moving Day Making the move-in day memorable for your parents can profoundly impact their overall perspective about moving to an assisted living facility. This day marks a significant transition in their life, and infusing it with positive experiences can help counterbalance any nervousness or unease they might be feeling. Consider planning activities your parents enjoy, such as a family meal or a movie night in their new home. Before they arrive, you could also help them personalize their new space with familiar items, like cherished photographs or favorite books. This will create a sense of familiarity and show them that their comfort and happiness are a top priority. By turning the move-in day into a celebration rather than just a logistical event, you can help your parents associate their new living environment with positive emotions and experiences right from the start. Contact Us 6. Get Acquainted with Neighbors and Staff Encouraging your parents to get acquainted with their new community and the people around them can significantly enhance their experience in an assisted living facility. This familiarization process can foster a sense of belonging and help alleviate any feelings of loneliness or isolation they might initially experience. Encourage them to participate in community activities, events, or clubs that align with their interests, which could be anything from art classes to book clubs or fitness sessions. Meeting neighbors and making friends can also provide a strong social support network. Remind them that everyone in the facility is in a similar situation and that it's perfectly okay to reach out, introduce themselves, and start conversations. They can cultivate meaningful connections by actively engaging with their new surroundings and making their new environment feel much more like home. 7. Acknowledge Emotions Recognizing that moving to an assisted living facility is a significant change for your parents is crucial in supporting them effectively throughout the process. It's completely normal for them to experience a range of emotions—from anxiety and sadness to possibly even excitement about the new chapter in their lives. As their adult children, it's essential to be patient, understanding, and supportive during this transition. Validate their feelings and encourage open communication about their fears and concerns. Remember, this move isn't just about physical relocation; it's also a significant emotional shift. They may be worried about not having as much autonomy and feel anxious about receiving care from someone that isn’t a family member. Your empathy and reassurance can provide immense comfort during this time. By being there for them, you can help transform this challenging period into a more positive experience, paving the way for them to embrace the opportunities and benefits their new home offers.
