Residents frequently ask us when “those cute puppies” are coming back. Lucky for us, at the end of October we had a puppy party just in time for Halloween! We were visited by 3 puppies who were all full of love and energy. Residents loved reminiscing about dogs they had in their families and how much love they’ve always had for animals!
In the month of October, residents got fall festive and took on a new flavor challenge: pumpkin spice! We learned about the history of the flavor and tried some interesting snacks that were pumpkin spice flavored. The overall favorites were the pumpkin spice hot cocoa and pumpkin spice pretzels! In addition to the pumpkin spice, we celebrated National M&M Day by trying out some new flavors of M&M’s. We tried 6 different flavors, and the overall favorites were the plain Jane and the peanut M&M’s!
As the joy and excitement of preparing for the holiday season nears, please remember to share the special gift that each and every one of us possess – Love. Love is so important to God that it is mentioned hundreds of times in every translation of the Bible. I remember during my early days at Sunday school that our instructors would pull the classroom in a circle and tell stories of how Christ referred to love as the greatest commandment of all, and how he spent his ministry demonstrating love to his followers. Learning to love God’s way provides the most tangible picture of him available to the world. Nothing will draw you closer to him or to others than walking in unconditional love. As my wife and I are raising our two beautiful and inquisitive young girls, we try to demonstrate that true love encompasses enthusiasm and passion, and it bases itself more on trust, commitment, and action. I encourage all of us to love someone today through your actions: give a gift, a loving touch, a personal note, or an act of kindness. For it was Saint Thomas Aquinas who shared that to love is to will the good of another. Jim

Contact Us Adherence to Regulations: A Commitment to Quality Care When you choose a new home for yourself or your parents to spend retirement, it’s crucial to select a location that can provide them with the care and dedicated attention to their needs that they deserve. Understanding the regulations that govern assisted living facilities is crucial for ensuring residents receive the highest standard of care. Like most states, Pennsylvania has specific rules for such residences. These guidelines cover everything from the facility's physical layout to the type of care services offered. Here's a simplified breakdown of Pennsylvania's key rules for licensed assisted living facilities: Exercise Spaces: Assisted Living Residences (ALRs) must have indoor and outdoor spaces where residents can exercise. These dedicated spaces ensure that residents can stay active and enjoy fresh air. Room Occupancy: There's a limit on how many people can live in one room or unit in an ALR. No more than two residents are allowed in each room, which helps to make sure everyone has enough space and privacy. Getting Approved: Getting a license for an ALR involves several steps, including getting special approval if the residence offers specific types of care or operates more than one type of home. Aging in Place: Pennsylvania believes in letting residents stay in their homes for as long as possible as they grow older. An assisted living community like Columbia Cottage offers a healthcare model that allows residents to remain in a familiar place for as long as possible, even as their needs change. We offer ten levels of care here that serve our residents best and continue to evolve with them as their needs change. Priority Placement: If a person needs to be placed in a skilled nursing facility soon, they are given priority when applying to or living in an ALR. Who's in Charge: The Department of Human Services (DHS) in Pennsylvania, specifically the Office of Long-Term Living's Bureau of Human Services Licensing (BHSL), is the department that keeps up with personal care homes and ALRs. They check up on these facilities, ensure they follow all the rules, and can revoke their license if they don't. As a licensed assisted living provider, we strictly adhere to Pennsylvania’s assisted living regulations and the state requirements for assisted living facilities. What does this mean for our residents? They can expect 24/7 care, personalized assistance, and a community that fosters independence and social engagement. Contact Us Is Staff Available for Around-the-clock Care in Assisted Living Facilities? In Pennsylvania, assisted living facilities are expected to have staff available 24/7 to cater to residents' diverse needs. When considering a facility, potential residents and their families should inquire about the staffing ratio and staff qualifications, as these factors impact the quality of care provided. Some facilities use staff scheduling software to ensure proper staffing compliance. Pennsylvania's Department of Human Services, Bureau of Human Services Licensing, oversees the regulation of assisted living residences and personal care homes. At Columbia Cottage, we are the only licensed assisted living facility in each zip code we serve through our locations, and we offer more than just basic care. Caregivers' guilt and other emotions often stem from a sense of perceived abandonment or failure in their caregiving duties. Suppose you are looking to alleviate those feelings of guilt. In that case, this piece might help shed light on the benefits of assisted living facilities and their positive impact on both seniors and their caregivers. One of those positive impacts is the relief from the caregiver’s guilt, as many people find that transitioning their loved ones to an assisted living facility helps them feel their loved one is getting even better care. At Columbia Cottage, we have helped many people navigate the changing relationships and emotions of transitioning their loved ones into our care. So, we know a little about caregiver’s guilt and want to help you learn how to relieve yourself of that burden. Contact Us Understanding Caregiver's Guilt: What is It? Caregiver's guilt is a typical emotional response when transitioning to a less hands-on role in caring for your parents. It can manifest through self-doubt, regret, and fear of not doing enough. It's important to remember that this guilt reflects a deep love and concern more than any shortcomings. You are doing enough. When you turn your family member’s care over to those dedicated healthcare professionals who will meet their needs through their retirement years, you are probably providing better quality care for them than you could give at home. How Can I Manage or Overcome Feelings of Guilt as a Caregiver? Managing caregiver's guilt involves recognizing the feelings, understanding that it's normal to experience these emotions, and seeking support from others. Self-care, setting realistic expectations, and focusing on positive aspects of caregiving can also help. Does Everyone Experience Caregiver's Guilt When Transitioning Their Parents to Assisted Living? Not everyone experiences caregiver's guilt while transitioning their parents to assisted living, but it is indeed a common emotion that many face. This guilt can stem from many sources, including feeling like you're giving up on them or failing them somehow. However, it's important to remember that making such a decision is often in the best interest of your parents' health and safety. Moving to assisted living can provide them with the professional care and support they need, especially if their health requirements have increased beyond what is safe or comfortable to manage at home. This transition can also offer opportunities for social interaction and activities that might not be available at home. Thus, while guilt is understandable, you can begin to feel better by balancing it with the recognition that you are taking this step to ensure a higher quality of life for your loved ones. Contact Us Are There Any Resources or Caregivers’ Support Groups to Help Deal with This Guilt? There are many resources for caregivers dealing with guilt, from online forums for sharing experiences to support groups offering shared understanding and professional counseling services providing expert advice. Caregiver burnout is common and can lead to caregiver resentment and feeling trapped as a caregiver. These feelings can trigger the guilt you may be experiencing, and recognizing it is the first step towards managing it. Caregivers must give themselves space to feel these emotions and remember the importance of self-care, which can involve reaching out to supportive individuals, pursuing personal interests, or taking necessary breaks. Balancing personal well-being leads to less burnout, less guilt, and an easier time making level-headed decisions for your loved one’s well-being. How Can I Ensure I'm Making the Right Decision For My Parents' Care? Making the right decision for your parents' care involves considering their health needs, quality of life, and safety. It can be helpful to involve healthcare professionals in this decision to ensure you consider all factors. If you are finding it difficult to make this decision on your own, we can help. Moreover, this shift can reintroduce aspects of your relationship that might have been lost in the caregiving process. For instance, you might now can engage in leisurely activities together, share stories, or simply enjoy each other's company without the constant worry about health issues or daily care tasks. This transition can also alleviate feelings of guilt or stress that often accompany caregiving, leading to more positive and meaningful interactions.
